Lord Aadhi Konanayakar Temple is
an important Hindu shrine which is located in the Thambalagamuwa village of
Trincomalee District. Situated at a distance of just 24kms from the Trincomalee
town, the temple is considered to be the first and foremost temple of the lord
Koneswaram. The temple was rebuilt in the 17th century by replacing
the original ‘temple of thousand pillars’. When the original temple was
destroyed, it was rebuilt by keeping the original sanctorum of the previous
temple remains.
If you feel intrigued by the
folklores and mythological tales, then this temple will surely excite you as it
has interesting stories associated with it. According to Tirukonasala Purana
the temple was built with an aid from Kandyan King Rajasingha II (1630-1689)
after the loss of original Koneswaram temple in the Trincomalee town.
The idols that were saved from the destroyed temple were moved from place to
place and eventually located in a secure territory under the Kandyan
jurisdiction.
According to the chronicle Vara
rasasinkam identified with Rajasingha II by historians says that the Kandyan
kings also provided for the upkeep of the temple by allocating land to the
temple in perpetuity and revenue distribution from local taxes. Another Tamil
text of interest is Konesar Kalvettu. It is written from a point of view
legitimizing the claims of the new temple that is Ati Konnanayakar to the
traditions, revenue and services rendered to the destroyed Koneswaram temple.
Author of the text is Kavirasa Varotayan and was written after the new temple
was established. Do visit the temple if your Sri Lanka visa application form has been approved.
The temple is built completely
from stone and has two enclosed pathways. Although one can find various shrines
to Pulleyar, Navagraha, Murunkan, Valli and Tevayani, the temple`s presiding
deity is Lord Shiva. The annual festivals are held and celebrated at a grand
scale. With the onset of the civil war, the temple was abandoned in the 1980s
and 90s, when the villagers left the village. But in 2004, the temple was
restored to its glory.
The temple is a true epitome of
architecture and even if you are not someone who is looking for some spiritual
awakening, a visit to this temple for its architecture is a must. So book your
